Hub World

General

This level serves as a connection between the other levels as well as an area of refuge. The player will go deeper into the Temple as they progress whilst also gaining new abilities.

Reflection:

What went right:

  • The temple had every area fully completed.

  • Blocked areas are completely unreachable.

  • All areas except the basement were not dangerous as planned.

What went wrong:

  • Some areas were not fully polished.

  • The lighting had issues in some parts.

  • Picture in picture had to be removed due to performance issues.

Planning

Design Goals:

Exploration: I wanted the player to have things to see at all times both inside and out. To accomplish this, I created multiple areas outside as well as large cliffs and mountains. I also made multiple rooms in the temple that have no gameplay but can just be looked at.

Refuge: Since the player will be brought here between levels, I wanted it to be a place where the player can take a break from the gameplay. The only exception being the basement, as the player is challenged before they get to the final level.

​

Semi-Realism: I wanted this level (mostly the Temple itself) to serve a purpose if it existed. This meaning that it should feel like people can actually live here for the most part. I added areas that are for eating, sleeping, and storage.

  1. Spawn Area - Where the player starts and can see the explorable areas up ahead.

  2. Gardens - Where the player will find the portal to levels 1 and 2.

  3. Temple - The main point of focus that contains levels 3-5.

  4. Tower - A platforming section that unlocks the temple.

  5. Basement - The bottom part of the temple that contains the final level.

Walkthrough Maps

Key:

Description:

The walkthrough maps mark the main path of our two characters by using a circle with a reference number and a color. The reference number refers to the step order that the path is taken starting at one. Yellow means that the path is played using Ember (Movement Character), blue represents the same thing but for Ignis (Combat Character), and green means that the path can be taken by either character without affecting gameplay.

Hub Act 1

Description:

This act happens as soon as the player spawns into the game. The purpose of this act is to introduce and teach the player our main mechanics using levels 1 and 2.

Hub Act 2

Description:

This act begins after the player unlocks the Temple's gates and can now enter. This act does not introduce new abilities to the player in the hub, it is meant for them to practice familiar mechanics and learn new ones with levels 3 and 4 and master them in act 3.
